I Craft, I Travel Light opens in Archangelsk

Icraft utstilling av Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum på turne til Arkhangelsk

The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts Northern Norway and Northern Norway Art Museum have collaborated to create the exhibition I Craft, I Travel Light, which will tour several art museums in Russia and Norway the next year. The exhibition opened October 16th at Archangelsk Art Museum.

We want to bring the rich aestetic tradition in border areas into the light, and at the same time contribute to the strenghtening of the identity and status of arts and crafts. The exhibition includes arts and crafts based on traditional natural materials from the Barents region, like tree bark, raindeer horns, fish skin and wood, in combination with modern recycled materials and found objects. I Craft, I Travel Light emphasizes the value of local resources, but also that life and culture is in perpetual motion. The traditional way of life is under pressure from modernisation and technological advances. How do traditional values and knowledge adjust to this? We hope the porject can be a plattform for reflection and an arena for an examination of way of life and sustainability in the north.

The exhibition features both Norwegian and Russian artists, including among others Marianne Broch, Cecilie Haaland, Philipp Spillmann, Alexei Ogorodnik, Sergei Schemetov and Alexander Sverchkov.

We are very exited for this project, and look forward to welcoming I Craft, I Travel Light to Northern Norway Art Museum in April 2017.
